Well, you have to trust your gut and try to do the right thing, because it's our choices that make us who we are.
Susan to Gregory Heffley, her second son in Diary of a Wimpy Kid (2010 film).

Susan Heffley (known as Ann Heffley in the online book), is the wife of Frank Heffley and the mother of Rodrick, Greg, and Manny Heffley. She is the secretary of the PTA who once worked as a preschool teacher, and once was the substitute teacher in Greg's class. She is a major character in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

In the first three Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies, Susan is played by Rachael Harris, with that role being filled by Alicia Silverstone in the fourth movie in 2017. In the first three animated films she is voiced by Erica Cerra.

Personality

Susan is a loving, caring, and kind of a bad mother, she spoils Manny, she constantly embarrasses Greg, and sometimes Rodrick as well, and never seems to care. Susan doesn't know much about how middle school kids act. Also, she shows immense favoritism towards Manny. Susan has been shown to have very neat handwriting, which is in cursive. She tries to get the family to bond with each other, by getting Frank and Greg accustomed to Rodrick's band, trying to get Greg, Rodrick and Manny to become close to Frank, but none of her plans ever seem to work, and often end up in rather disastrous consequences for Greg and Rodrick and sometimes even backfiring on her completely, though in some rare occasions they do end in success, like in the Deep End, in which though the trip had its bad moments, everything turned out good in the end. Additionally, Susan is assertive, as she puts her own desires above those of her family, rarely letting anyone in the family come to a decision about an outing or purchase without her permission, which results in her always winning. Susan is also shown to not accept criticism very well which may be the reason why she refuses to listen to anyone who point out flaws in her thinking.

According to Greg, she spoils Manny a lot, giving him many privileges to Manny that she never gave to Greg or Rodrick when they were younger, such as bringing toys to church to keep himself entertained and buying new clothes for Manny while giving Rodrick's old clothes to Greg. Susan even allowed Manny to verbally abuse Greg by calling him "Ploopy" (though she may have not paid too much attention to the whole matter because Greg interrupted her in the middle of a call and thus she was angry) and only put a stop to it when Greg called Manny, "Ploopy" for revenge. Susan dotes on Manny to the point where she doesn't scold or punish him at all. She even once drove all the way to Manny's pre-school just to cut an extra-slice on his sandwich. She also appears to give Manny a lot of money, even when he potties without being told (although this is not a big thing since he is already potty-trained) and also if his brothers swear in front of him, according to Greg he got up to $150 in American dollars.

However, it's shown sometimes that Susan will correct Manny if she sees it necessary: for example when Manny destroys Greg's gaming console, Susan talks with Manny and makes him realize that what he did was wrong, leading Manny to make an aluminum foil ball with toothpicks to compensate Greg (though Susan eventually let him throw it to the trash as Rowley got injured with it) and while she doesn't punish Manny when he cuts all electricity on their house to the point they nearly starved just because she didn't teach him how to tie his shoelaces, Susan is seen to not be so happy with Manny when she teaches him how to tie his shoelaces. She also tries to refuse a pig that Manny won by pure chance (when he just happened to guess the weight of a hog right) because they only entered for fun.

Appearance

Susan has a more different look from the rest of her family in the online and book version. Like her husband, she has an egg-shaped face. She wears large glasses that cover up her eyes. She has appeared in the series without glasses while sleeping and for multiple parts of Cabin Fever after her glasses are broken by Manny. She has tall dark round hair (not used by anyone else) and she wears normal pants, either sweatpants or slim jeans, and a sweater. In The Third Wheel, a flashback photo shows she didn't need to wear glasses and had longer hair. However, it is possible that she wore contact lens as it was revealed in Big Shot that she's been wearing glasses since middle school.

In the movie, Susan is played by Rachael Harris and, just like other members of her family, has brown hair and a flawless complexion. She also appears with her trademark glasses. Unlike in the book and online version, she wears make-up in the movie. She is played by Alicia Silverstone in The Long Haul movie.

Biography

Childhood

Susan was born to Gramma and Grampa and had 4 sisters. Susan was born in a different state. Her favorite book was Little Women. Much of her childhood remains unclear, though it is implied she was raised on a farm and she hinted she did not often get along with her siblings that much. She mentioned in The Deep End that she went to summer camp as a child, where she met some of her best friends she has today.

Middle School

Susan moved to Plainview and started dating Frank Heffley, her future husband, by the time she was in middle school, as there is a photo of Frank and Susan kissing while Frank wears the same leather jacket that Greg was wearing on the way to school. Since Frank was dating in middle school, this implies that Frank and Susan are almost the same age.

Susan played for her Middle School basketball team The "Huskies" as a backup point guard. In one of her matches the regular point guard got hurt so with the score tied in the fourth quarter she had to go and take her place. She did well, but with the clock winding down she got double-teamed, so she had to heave the ball up at the buzzer and her shot didn't succeed. Later, Susan told her son, Greg, that she's glad it happened because it taught her how to deal with failure.

Teenage Years

She attended summer camp and played the French Horn in high school; the rest is unknown.

Frank and Susan in their Honeymoon

Sometime after finishing high school, she married Frank Heffley, and they went to Isla de Corales during their honeymoon. They moved in and lived in a small apartment. When Frank was around 26, she gave birth to their first son, Rodrick Heffley.

Then, around four years later Greg was born. She let him sleep in the dresser drawer while Rodrick slept in a crib. They moved to their current house in Plainview at an unknown point. Then, nine years after Greg was born, their third and possibly last son Manny Heffley was born.

Trivia

  • Given estimates made based off of illustrations of her, Susan Heffley is most likely between 5' 2" (157.48 cm) and 5' 3" (160.02 cm) tall. However, this is entirely conjecture, as her height has never been stated definitively within the series.
  • Her first name was "Ann" in the original online version posted on Funbrain (2003-2006).
  • She is known for taking excessive measures in her ideas, as in Old School she disconnects anything that uses electricity. This usually comes to the irate of the other students at school who bully Greg because of his mom's ideas.
  • Susan serves as the main antagonist in Dog Days.
  • In the book, her glasses covering up her eyes are similar to Marcie from the Peanuts.
  • Susan has 4 sisters: Aunt Gretchen, Aunt Audra, (known as Audra Heffley), Aunt Cakey, and Aunt Veronica, mentioned in Hard Luck.
  • Just like her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she appears to like and favor Manny more than Greg and Rodrick.
  • In The Last Straw, she told Greg that Holly wasn't potty-trained at 4 years old.
  • Due to letting Manny have his own way always, letting Greg ride in a stroller, and allowing Rodrick to make funky music in his band, she seems to occasionally spoil her kids, though not usually in the case of the latter two.
  • Similarly to her second oldest son Greg, Susan doesn't appear to get along that well with her siblings.
  • In Cabin Fever, Susan is shown to be very impatient when waiting in lines. When Greg wanted to take pictures with characters at theme parks, Susan would walk up to the front and take a picture of the character and a random kid with it which Greg explains how their photo album is often filled with random people. She even went as far as forging Kenny Centazzo's signature on Greg's Tower of Druids copy which Greg didn't realize until he wanted to sell it.
  • Susan once dyed her hair blonde as revealed in a game that the family was playing in The Long Haul.
  • Susan might not have been born be in Greg’s city since it is stated that most of her extended family comes from other states, not to mention that she wasn't as attached to the city as Frank was when she suggested they move. But she probably moved into the city by the time she was in middle school, as she was seen kissing a young Frank in his leather jacket in some photos.
  • She cannot speak Spanish, and she has unsuccessfully attempted to understand it and teach it to her sons, as shown in The Long Haul when she thinks that the statement "What's your name" is "tè amò" (although its real meaning is "I love you.", with "what's your name" being "Como te llamas" in Spanish) She also thinks "Tengo hambre" is "tango hamburgers," however it actually means "I'm hungry." Despite this, she tries to teach her sons Spanish, although Manny is the only person who ends up learning anything.
  • Susan also tries to turn every opportunity into a teaching moment even if it's not the appropriate time. When Greg got scratched by Gramma's cat when he was younger, Susan tried to teach him how to spell, despite the fact that Greg got seriously hurt.
  • She seems to have a habit of using the word "real" to refer to stuff she appreciates, as though what she disapproves of is somehow not authentic. For example, she calls fast food "not real food" because she thinks it's unhealthy and she calls books that are not storybooks "not real literature".
  • In the Getaway, she takes the Heffley family on a vacation on a tropical island resort, Isla de Corales, in which she and Frank went there on their last honeymoon.
  • Susan's age is not explicitly stated in the books.
    • However, in the second film, Greg mentioned that Frank and Susan could be at least 40. In the books, he also implies that Frank is around 30 years older than him. Frank is likely a similar age to Susan, as Greg was able to fit into the jacket Frank wore when they were dating, and age gaps in dating are usually very small in middle school. So, she is likely around 42, or to be more accurate and less precise, her early forties.
  • Sometimes she is a bit inconsistent and hypocritical. For instance, she tells Greg to be honest but then tells a lie, and acts like she doesn't believe in psychic abilities but then says that Gramma has them.
    • In a few books, it's also hinted that her son Greg inherited her hypocritical personality.
  • In Wrecking Ball, she doesn't appear to take criticism very well. When the Heffley's attempted to sell their house, Susan was easily offended by the critiques other people made about their house while Greg took it rather well.
  • In Big Shot, she is shown to have very little confidence in her own son as she forces him to switch to the Funky Dunkers team when Preet Patel accidentally crushes one of the players foot with his boot as her "secret weapon", only for Greg to realize that she knew he wasn't a good player and knew he would ruin it for the Funky Dunkers. However, her plan backfired as Greg actually wins the game for the Funky Dunkers with a backwards half court shot.
  • In Cabin Fever, Susan didn't believe that Manny took her glasses. This shows that she lets Manny have his own way and believes he is innocent of anything.
  • In Rodrick Rules, Susan didn't believe that Manny stuffed a chocolate-chip cookie in the disk drive. This is another way that she lets Manny have his own way.
  • Aside from working as a preschool teacher and writing parenting articles for the local newspaper, it's unknown what Susan did for a living prior to eventually going back to school to get her master's degree. In the journals prior to when Susan decided to go back to school full-time (instead of just part-time), she appeared to mostly stay at home. Whether this means she was a stay-at-home or work-at-home mom is unclear.
  • Her maiden name (her last name before she and Frank got married) has never been revealed.
  • Her email in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (2012 film) is susanheffley1@gmail.com.
  • In Big Shot, it's revealed she's been wearing glasses since middle school, possibly earlier than that.
  • In No Brainer, Susan is shown to hold grudges against other people who wronged her even at the expense of her family as she was still sore over Mrs. O'Malley for spreading rumors about her. It's likely that Manny inherited this trait from her.
  • Susan has no eyes in the book, while in the movies, her eyes are seen.
  • However, her eyes are also seen in Cabin Fever.
  • Her flawed parenting could be the result of her mother, Gramma's lack of respect for her.
  • In Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2011 film), Susan's laptop is possibly seen running MacOS X Lion.
  • It is shown that she is left-handed when Greg describes the French horn is a left-handed instrument.
